WeChat for foreign visitors: sign-up, verification, and paying

Set up WeChat before visiting China, link an eligible international card, understand payment codes and keep hospital messages organized.

Sign-up steps, verification rules and wallet limits are WeChat's published policies as quoted in the article; the app's own prompts govern in case of change.

Create the account before setting up payments

A WeChat account and Weixin Pay setup are separate steps. Register with a phone number you can keep, then add your own eligible international card in the wallet. A mainland bank account is not required for this payment route.

Install the official app, select the number’s country or region and complete the on-screen verification. If additional security verification appears, follow the app’s process. Do not buy an existing account or give a login code to someone offering paid verification.

Once messaging works, add the confirmed hospital or coordinator contact and send a test message. Label contacts with the hospital, campus and role so appointment and follow-up conversations remain easy to find.

Add identity details and a card in Wallet

The usual route is Me → Services → Wallet → Cards → Add a Card. Enter your own card details and complete the requested identity verification, including passport details where required; labels vary with language and version.

The identity record and cardholder details should agree. Linking may require an issuer text or confirmation in the banking app, so keep both accessible. Successful linking associates the card with the wallet; it does not pre-authorize every merchant or amount.

If payment is absent from the menu, look for Weixin Pay under the settings/tools options or use Tencent’s official help entry point. Read a decline message before acting: identity problems belong in wallet verification, issuer authorization belongs with the bank, and merchant restrictions require another accepted method. Re-registering an account does not remove a merchant’s acquiring restrictions.

Use the right code for the transaction

For purchases, either scan the merchant’s collection code or let the cashier scan your payment code. Your personal collection code, transfers and red packets are different functions from an international-card merchant purchase.

Read the standard fee and any account-specific waiver

The standard international-card rule is no platform fee up to RMB 200 and usually 3% of the whole payment above that amount. Tencent announced a further new-user offer in 2026; it is not a permanent exemption for every account.

Tencent’s May 2026 announcement described a fee waiver for eligible first-time international-card users for 90 consecutive calendar days from their first transaction, covering daily spending up to RMB 1,000. The in-app terms and payment screen establish whether it is active for your account and transaction. Older 60-day promotions should not be confused with this announcement.

For verified international users, Tencent publishes ceilings of up to US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 annually. Account, card and transaction controls still determine the usable amount. Arrange hospital deposits in advance rather than treating a published ceiling as guaranteed purchasing power.

Use chat for updates and retain the formal records

WeChat works well for appointment updates, arrival details and contact with the care team. Save formal reports, prescriptions and discharge summaries separately from the chat history.

Enter a hospital mini-program through the hospital website or a confirmed official account. Use consistent patient names and document numbers. International-card acceptance and passport registration are separate capabilities; if a form only accepts a mainland identity card, use the hospital’s manual or international-patient registration channel.

Send original documents, with imaging and written reports separately where useful; an ordinary chat image may not preserve the detail needed for review. After payment, retain the merchant, amount and transaction reference. Refunds belong with the original collecting institution, not a new personal account requesting a release fee or deposit.
