A consultation fee is the beginning of the bill
Beijing United Family’s published list, updated 1 January 2026, puts primary-care consultations at RMB 500–1,800 and specialist consultations at RMB 840–2,840 per visit. Tests and other services have separate entries. These are one private hospital’s tariffs, not a national average.
Use the following figures to understand how a bill is assembled. They are published list prices rather than a quote for your appointment. The applicable consultation level and ordered services determine the final amount.
A price comparison is useful only when the service matches. An ordinary public outpatient appointment and a private specialist consultation may differ in what is included, how they are booked and what support accompanies the visit. A lower headline number does not establish the total saving.
| Item | Published price | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Primary-care consultation | 500–1,800 | Per visit |
| Specialist consultation | 840–2,840 | Per visit |
| Complete blood count | 285 | Per test |
| Venous blood collection | 160 | Per collection |
| Outpatient nursing | 115–440 | Per day |
Three lines can turn a consultation price into a different number
Using those published tariffs, a primary-care consultation plus a complete blood count and blood collection adds up to RMB 945–2,245. That is an arithmetic illustration of three charges, not a package or a real patient’s bill.
The calculation is RMB 500–1,800 + 285 + 160. It does not recommend a blood test or predict what a clinician will order. Nursing, medicines and any additional work remain outside that subtotal.
This is why ‘How much is an appointment?’ and ‘How much should I budget for this visit?’ can receive different answers. For a first assessment, the hospital may be able to price the consultation precisely while leaving investigations provisional until the doctor has seen you.
Ask for a staged estimate: the booked consultation, the known planned services, then the charging basis for possible additions. Keep each stage identifiable. A single low figure described as ‘from’ is hard to use if it never states where the estimate stops.

Older public-hospital prices need their dates attached
HKU–Shenzhen’s standard-fee page dated 7 March 2022 lists a specialist consultation at RMB 100 and family medicine at RMB 200, with different inclusions. Those figures illustrate a charging structure; they are not confirmed October 2026 quotes.
The older family-medicine entry bundles specified routine services, while the specialist entry leaves other charges separate. Comparing the two numbers without reading the inclusions would miss the point of the tariff.
The hospital has also published later notices changing service prices. Use the dated page to frame a question, then obtain the fee for the exact clinic and appointment you are booking. Do not transplant a general-service tariff into an international or special-service estimate.
For the same reason, a screenshot without a hospital name, date or service category is poor evidence for a medical-travel budget. Keep the source page and the written estimate together so you can see which figure was background information and which was offered for your visit.
For treatment, price the episode rather than the room
An inpatient estimate should separate accommodation, medical care, nursing, the procedure, anaesthesia, medicines and supplies. A deposit is money held against charges; it is not evidence that the final bill is capped.
Ask which items are fixed, which depend on actual use and what would trigger a revised estimate. For surgery, the proposed operation and any implant or device need to be sufficiently defined for the quote to mean anything. An extra inpatient day can affect several lines, not only the bed charge.
If an insurer is involved, get its response against the specific provider and proposed service. Distinguish the hospital’s price from your expected out-of-pocket payment. Direct settlement, pre-authorisation and reimbursement are separate administrative questions; none should be inferred from a logo.
Before paying, keep the estimate, exclusions, deposit terms and cancellation terms in one file. After care, obtain the itemised bill and receipts. The useful budget is the cost of the planned episode with its uncertainties visible, not the cheapest number found on a hospital website.
